Description:

East Asia, China, Song Dynasty, ca. 960 to 1278 CE. A beautifully crafted Qingbai ware lidded vessel in the form of a melon or gourd, fashioned from bright white clay and coated with a semi-transparent white glaze with a slight green tint. The glaze pooled in the recessed areas, creating depth and visual interest, especially where it has dripped around the base. The exterior features incised vertical ribs, a dimpled top, and a button stem, enhancing the resemblance to a lobed melon. The interior is partially glazed on the lower half, while the unglazed base reveals the pristine white clay. Covered boxes like this were often used to store powders, cosmetics, and other daily-use items. Qingbai ware, defined by its smooth, glassy glaze, originated under the Song Dynasty and reached its height from the 10th through 13th centuries. Its signature pale blue-green tint or "shadow" results from a small amount of iron oxide in a reduction-fired kiln, which also allowed for thin-walled, delicate forms. Size: 3.25" Diameter x 3.3" H (8.3 cm x 8.4 cm)
