China, Song Dynasty, ca. 960 to 1279 CE. A grey brick from a Chinese temple with a beautiful depiction of the Buddha in relief standing beneath an ogee arch. The Buddha stands in the Abhaya-vara mudra, with one hand raised, palm out, and the other facing downward, palm out. This is the gesture of fearlessness, representing protection, peace, and dispelling fear. Faint pigment remains in bright orange and blue; Buddha's hair, with a large ushnisha, is painted black as are the details of his face. During the Song Dynasty, China expanded its trade along the Silk Road and South and Central Asian Buddhist proselytizers brought many sculptures and paintings of the Buddha into the country. This depiction of the Buddha shows the blend of Chinese art styles with those influences. The ogee arch the Buddha stands beneath is based on a form from India called the chaitya arch. One edge of this brick is also decorated, so it must have been on an end. Size: 2.75" L x 5.25" W x 12.1" H (7 cm x 13.3 cm x 30.7 cm)
From the mid-6th century CE onward, Chinese temples shifted from being made of wood to brick, which better survived rotting, fires, and various other disasters. During the Song Dynasty, numerous brick pagodas were built, like the famous Iron Pagoda in Kaifeng. Originally built of wood, it was struck by lightning and burned down before being rebuilt of brick in 1049 under the order of Emperor Renzong. Bricks like this one were mass produced to serve as the walls. The mold-making of bricks allowed them to have elaborate designs.
