Description:

China, Song Dynasty, ca. 960 to 1276 CE. This glazed porcelain small jar has incised artwork of a traditional Chinese dragon and two tiny hands on either side of the mouth. During the Song Dynasty, China was the most technologically advanced country in the world, and celadon pieces like this one attest to that. The olive green glaze color of this jar is thought to be unique to the northern Song kilns such as Longquan, although it cannot be dated specifically to the Northern Song dynasty because the end production date on those kilns is unknown. Kilns in the Song Dynasty could achieve much hotter temperatures than kilns anywhere else in the world, and celadon jars like this one were exported around the world via the Silk Road and shipping routes to Japan. Size: 3-1/2"H x 3-3/4" at widest (8.9 x 9.5 cm).
