Description:

China, possibly Song Dynasty, ca. 960 to 1279 CE. A small bronze rhyton (ritual wine flask) in the form of a bull with a naturalistic face tapering to a foot. This item was probably made as a copy of a much older vessel; interest in antiquarian ritual objects was high in China from the Song to Qing Dynasties, and were based on a guide whose oldest form we know from 962 CE called the Sanli Tu. This guide illustrated and discussed ritual objects from much older Chinese dynasties, who, in the Song Dynasty, were already being studied methodically by Chinese scholars. This rhyton form may have been inspired by trade goods brought to China from the Mediterranean along the Silk Road. Size: 2.6" W x 5.3" H (6.6 cm x 13.5 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Camocho collection
