Description:

East Asia, China, late Qing to Republic era, ca. 19th century CE. A Shoushan stone stamp seal adorned with carvings of lotus flowers and fish - and unlike so many on the market today, this has actually been used. The cubic sides feature etched river landscapes, with one side inscribed with character script. The seal face is carved in the "yang wen" or "zhuwen" style, meaning the characters are in relief, allowing them to be coated in ink for imprinting. Shoushan stone, the most renowned agalmatolite in China, is sourced from Shoushan village in northern Fujian and has been used for carvings since the 5th century CE.
