Description:

East Asia, China, late Qing Dynasty to Republic era, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A Shoushan stone stamp seal featuring a mother foo lion and her cub (also known as "fu" lion or "fu" dog). The ovoid base is engraved with character script on the sides, while the seal face is carved with fish, with the characters in the "yang wen" or "zhuwen" style, meaning they are in relief and would be inked for imprinting. Such seals were commonly used as personal signatures and played a significant role in legitimizing documents. The term "foo dog" is a western name for the Chinese "shi shi," guardian lions believed to protect sacred buildings from evil. These celestial lions were regarded as powerful animals with mythical qualities related to Buddhism and royalty. Size: 2.5" L x 1.2" W x 2.75" H (6.4 cm x 3 cm x 7 cm)
