East Asia, China, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A stunning hand-carved shoushan stone depicting a landscape - a river running between trees and a cliffside village, with a sampan / punt style boat. An elderly sage, two children, and the punter propelling the vessel with a pole ride the stylized waves. The verso has a rocky craig with stairs and a tree. The details, especially in the leaves and bark, are skillfully rendered. Shoushan stone, the most famous agalmatolite in China, is mined in the Shoushan village in northern Fujian and has been used for carvings since the 5th century CE.
