Description:

East Asia, China, Shang Dynasty, ca. 1300 to 1100 BCE. An impressive stone scepter imitating a bronze halberd, also known as a ge, from the Shang Dynasty. Presenting a long, flattened form, the ceremonial implement exhibits a slanted blade, a perforated mid-section, and a grooved butt. Created from 4500 BCE forward, stone and jade were employed for exceptionally elegant versions of utilitarian tools. These were not meant for daily use but for displays of status and power, as well as special rituals and ceremonies. Size of axe: 9.75" L x 2.8" W (24.8 cm x 7.1 cm); of case: 12.25" L x 5.5" W x 2.5" H (31.1 cm x 14 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: private Brighton, Massachusetts, USA collection, purchased in China in April 1968
