Description:

East Asia, China, late Shang to early Zhou Dynasty, ca. 11th to 10th century BCE. A leaded-bronze cup known as a "zhi" with a bulbous body, waisted neck, and flared ovoid rim. Upon the base of the concave pedestal foot is a character inscription and a register of curvilinear motifs surround the upper body in low relief. The cup was created via the piece-mold casting method, developing a rich green patina and mineral deposits throughout. Such vessels are often part of a burial shrine with other bronze wine storage and serving vessels to accompany the deceased in the afterlife. Size: 3" L x 2.3" W x 5" H (7.6 cm x 5.8 cm x 12.7 cm)
