Description:

East Asia, China, Shang Dynasty, ca. 1600 to 1046 BCE. A wonderful pair of circular discs with carinated peripheries and drilled central holes, each hand-carved from mottled black stone with gray and beige inclusions. Each disc exhibits meticulously polished surfaces that create a lustrous sheen, and some of the original drilling striations are still visible within the central opening. Discs like these examples were perhaps used for a number of purposes including ceremonial coins or funerary offerings similar to larger jade bi discs. Size of each (both are relatively similar): 1.6" Diameter (4.1 cm)
