Description:

East Asia, China, Shang Dynasty, ca. 1200 BCE. A wonderful necklace composed of twenty-six cylindrical beads carved from mottled cream-hued stone with dark inclusions. Displayed in the center of the necklace is a large cicada pendant with a bulbous head, a tapering body flanked by a pair of stocky wings, a pair of nearly-spherical eyes protruding in front of the face, and a biconically-drilled suspension hole. Each stone bead is drilled lengthwise through the body, and some of the larger beads exhibit lightly-rounded bodies and act as spacer beads. Strung in modern times, this is a fabulous example of ancient art meets modern stylization! Size (necklace): 24.5" L (62.2 cm); size of largest bead (cicada pendant): 1.625" W x 2.5" H (4.1 cm x 6.4 cm).
