Description:

China, Shang Dynasty, ca. 1558 to 1046 BCE. This is a finely-shaped bronze spearhead with a large, round ridge and a well-shaped socket. It is from China's Bronze Age, an almost mythical time recorded in the Book of Documents, the Records of the Grand Historian, and the charmingly-named Bamboo Annals. The excavated ruins of the city of Yin, thought to be the last Shang Dynasty capital, have revealed a culture rich with grave goods, with many thousands of objects made of bronze, jade, stone, bone, and ceramic buried in elaborate royal tombs alongside animal and human sacrifices. The internment of fine objects like this one is a powerful symbol of the disposable wealth of the Shang rulers. Size: 10.8" L x 1.8" W (27.4 cm x 4.6 cm).

Provenance: Ex-Estate of John Piscopo. Mr. Piscopo was one of the largest collectors of ancient weapons in the US with a collection that spanned all cultures, all ages.
