Description:

East Asia, China, late Qing Dynasty to Republic Era, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. This exquisite wooden storage chest is masterfully carved with intricate dragons amid swirling clouds. Made from Chinese rosewood, also known as Huanghuali ("yellow flowering pea"), it features a ruyi-shaped clasp with loops, allowing it to be secured with a padlock. The lid lifts on brass hinges, while the front double doors open to reveal a removable drawer with brass pulls. The dragons, each depicted with five toes -a symbol of the emperor- are accentuated by a stain that enhances the intricate motifs. These table-top cabinets, known as "guanpi xiang" (official boxes), were not only used by officials but also by the wealthy elite to store valuables such as toiletries, jewelry, writing implements, and seals. Size: 19" L x 14.5" W x 20" H (48.3 cm x 36.8 cm x 50.8 cm)
