Description:

East Asia, China, Qing to Republic era, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A ruyi scepter or belt hook carved from a pretty mottled green and aubergine stone with deeply incised wave motifs and characters on the knob. A ruyi serves as either a ceremonial scepter within Chinese Buddhism or a talisman representing power and good fortune in Chinese folklore. Belt hooks were sometimes carved in the form of ruyis, and today, belt hooks are still appreciated as decorative items and occasionally worn as part of traditional Chinese attire for ceremonial occasions or cultural events.
