East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. mid-19th century CE. A perfect example of a beauty and a beast! A delightful pottery kendi or wine vessel in the form a woman riding a sea monster with a conical foot and a flared fill hole rising from the back, all adorned in celadon and chocolate brown-hued glaze. The female passenger grasps the beast by the neck, its head presenting a bulbous nose and an open mouth that doubles as the spout, while the woman's raised head displays a lengthy coiffure that extends to the tail of the animal, serving as a handle for the vessel. Size: 9.3" L x 4" W x 7.8" H (23.6 cm x 10.2 cm x 19.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
