East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 1644 to 1912 CE. A deep, black quartz carved and smoothed in a beautiful round openwork pendant with the head of a bat in the center. Flowing outward from the center are floral/zoomorphic motifs that form the body of the bat while also looking like huge leaves, flowers, and vines. The delicate carving is attached to a woven string with five black and gold cloisonne enamel beads to form a necklace. Size: 28" L (of string); 2" W (of pendant) (71.1 cm; 5.1 cm)
