Description:

China, Qing Dynasty, ca. mid-17th to 19th century CE, probably earlier in the period. A fabulous example of the unique Manchu bow, which, following the Manchu invasion of China from the north and their foundation of the Qing Dynasty, became the standard bow used by all Chinese archers. It is a composite recurved bow that shares its roots with the type used in Mongolia during the medieval period. It features a wooden core with a thickened handle wrapped with leather and curved "ears". A reinforcement made of curved Chinese water buffalo horn holds the upper ear in place. Sinew from a buffalo's back is wrapped around the sharpest part of the curve, providing further support. All components are held together with an adhesive made from fish bladder. Size: 3.65" W x 41.5" H (9.3 cm x 105.4 cm)
