Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. late 19th century CE. A stunning sculpture of a seated bull, skillfully carved from lavender-hued nephrite (jade). The lovely animal lays angled to his right with his front right leg folded beneath his bulbous snout and his hind legs beneath his posterior. His left front leg is propped up and bent at the knee, as though he is about to heave himself to his feet. Topped with two sizable, swooping horns, his visage features almond-shaped eyes, an incised mouth, flared nostrils, and petite ears. Small incised lines representing fur adorn the surface of the sculpture, while his intricately sculpted tail lays on his backside. Size: 1.5" W x 0.875" H (3.8 cm x 2.2 cm)
