Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 1644 to 1912 CE. A hand-carved reliquary figure depicting a seated male garbed in fine vestments. The man sits upon a narrow bench while holding both hands in front of his portly belly and presents with a rigid posture. His aged countenance is accentuated with brow wrinkles, rounded cheek bones, a bulbous nose, and a lengthy beard, and his head is topped with a courtier's hat. Areas of red pigment and glinting gilding further adorn the figure. A deep cavity behind the back allowed the figure's owner to insert petite prayer scrolls or other votive offerings to be sealed inside. Size: 4.3" W x 6.7" H (10.9 cm x 17 cm)
