Description:

East Asia, China, Qin Dynasty, ca. 221 to 206 BCE. A cast-bronze sword of lengthy form that is covered in fine layers of naturally occurring patina in hues of brown, russet, and green. The sword (known as a duan jian) exhibits a bifacial blade with sharpened edges, a shallow midrib, and a pointed tip beneath a thick hand guard. The rod-form handle features a pair of protruding ringlets that facilitated a stronger grip for the warrior as well as a discoid pommel on the end which ensured that the wielder's hand did not accidentally slip off mid-swing. While deadly and functional, finely made bronze weapons like this sword were signs of prestige typically used as ceremonial or funerary weapons. Size: 21.75" L x 2" W (55.2 cm x 5.1 cm)
