Description:

Central Asia, Ordos Culture, modern day Mongolia / China, ca. 500 to 100 BCE. A lovely gilt copper belt buckle featuring a pair of fighting quadrupeds; the animal on the left opening its mouth as it places its front foot on the neck of the animal at the right who bends his head downward. Featuring a pair of loops for suspension on the verso, the elaborate, stylized composition is adorned with heavy gilding of 65.7% - over 15 karats - gold. Size: 2.5" W x 1.3" H (6.4 cm x 3.3 cm); gold quality: 65.7% (over 15 karats); weight: 39.3 grams

The Ordos people were equestrian nomads who lived in the grassy, high steppes environment of the Ordos Plateau. Although today this area is a desert, when the Ordos people lived there, it was lush, and cross-cut with many rivers. The Ordos culture is an interesting mix of Central Asian and Chinese, possibly the furthest east group of Scythians. They are famous for their beautiful bronzes, which have been found in graves both for the Ordos and, later, for the Chinese.
