Description:

East Asia, China, Northern Wei Dynasty, ca. 386 to 535 CE. A hand-carved gray stone head of Buddha. The face features downcast eyes beneath generous lids, a sharply crested nose, full lips with a delineated philtrum, deep nasolabial folds, and large ears with drooping lobes evocative of the time before he renounced all worldly possessions and hung lavish jewels from them. His head is covered in a coiffure of drilled circular nodules, and rising from the middle is a rounded topknot. Size: 3.1" W x 4.8" H (7.9 cm x 12.2 cm)
