Description:

East Asia, China, Shang to Western Zhou Dynasty, ca. 1600 to 771 BCE. This thin nephrite jade carving depicts a crouching animal in profile, with both sides adorned with simple incised details. The stone is a pale, semi-translucent green that glows when backlit, featuring opaque white inclusions. The creature is abstract, possibly mythical, yet it bears a resemblance to a crouching feline. By the Shang Dynasty, jade carving had already been a tradition in China for over 2,000 years, often used as ceremonial or religious offerings and gifts. Size: 3" L x 1.75" W (7.6 cm x 4.4 cm)
