Description:

East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, ca. 3000 to 2500 BCE. A beautiful axe blade carved from opaque black stone with dark-brown, caramel, and cream-hued inclusions. The tool boasts smooth, flat faces, a tapered butt end with a drilled attachment hole, and an acutely-angled blade edge with a sharpened tip. Axes like this example are characteristic in form of similar examples from the southern Dawenkou, Longshan, Liangzhu, and Xuejiagang cultures of Neolithic China.
