Description:

East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, ca. 3000 to 2000 BCE. A sizable ceramic urn with a wide, piriform body, a rounded shoulder with a pair of applied strap handles, and a flared rim. The interior of the rim is painted with a solid strip of red pigment, and the rim's exterior is decorated with dense black-and-red stripes. A decorative register of tall curvilinear S-forms encircle the shoulder, with a horizontal black band below, and a quartet of vertical columns tracing towards the base. Size: 9.375" W x 8.8" H (23.8 cm x 22.4 cm).

  • Condition: Large area of repair to body, with loss to portion of repairs. Small chips to rim, handles, body, and base, with encrustations across interior and exterior surfaces, and fading to original pigmentation. Nice earthen deposits and traces of original pigmentation throughout.
