East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, Majiayao culture, ca. 3300 to 2000 BCE. A hand-built pottery jar with a wide circular base, a voluminous body with rounded walls, a slightly flared rim, and a pair of petite loop handles with small knobs. The pale orange-slipped vessel features a repeating frieze of crosshatch-filled diamonds that are enclosed with a pair of solid stripes and surmounted with a slender band of stippling. The Majiayao culture was comprised of a group of Neolithic communities who lived primarily in the upper Yellow River region in eastern Gansu, eastern Qinghai, and northern Sichuan, China. The Majiayao culture represents the first time that the Upper Yellow River region was widely occupied by agricultural communities, and it is famous for its painted pottery.
