Description:

East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, ca. 3000 to 2000 BCE. A fine ceramic jar with a rotund piriform body, a rounded shoulder, a squat, flared rim, and a pair of applied lug handles, all atop a petite circular base. The entire vessel is covered in a pale yellow-orange slip which acts as a soft ground upon which a decorative program of black-and-red painted linear motifs are presented. The inside of the rim bears a band of radiating spokes, and the body presents a concentric ladder-form decoration. Size: 7.8" W x 9.25" H (19.8 cm x 23.5 cm).

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple large pieces that have been restored in several areas, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Minor nicks to rim, handles, body, and base, and fading and abrasions to original pigmentation. Light root marks in scattered areas, and nice earthen deposits throughout.
