China, Neolithic period, ca. 3000 to 2000 BCE. Early carved jade disc of off-white nephrite jade now covered in nearly white caliche. Three carved mythological creatures - apparently variations of dragons slither along the outer edge in deep relief, reverse carved in spiral pattern. An object such as this would have been of immense importance to the owner and would have placed them securely in the elite status group. Size: 3.25" W x .25" H (8.3 cm x 0.6 cm)
