East Asia, China, Majiayao (also Gansu-Yangshao) culture, ca. 2500 to 2000 BCE. A hand-built pottery jar of sizable form exhibiting an inverted piriform body decorated with deep black linear motifs. Atop a light orange ground is a series of parallel chevrons, ladders, and zigzags reminiscent of landscape or sky motifs. Size: 13" L x 11" W x 13.875" H (33 cm x 27.9 cm x 35.2 cm)
