Description:

East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A ritualistic Sancai pottery sculpture of a garment rack glazed with green and ochre hues. This miniature piece is modeled after a life-sized piece of furniture that many people had for holding robes and other clothing of elite - functional storage and to display the beautiful textiles. Miniature pottery offerings known as mingqi were made to replicate furniture, animals, food, and other possessions to be buried with the deceased to use in the afterlife. Robe racks used in life were often made of wood, and few examples survive, so the miniature mingqi also serve as invaluable insight to how some furniture may have looked!
