Description:

East Asia, China, Ming to Qing Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1912 CE. A cast bronze tapir vessel, its body elaborately decorated with S-shaped and other traditional sinuous motifs as well as mottled patterns representing the animal's hide, and gilded throughout. The tapir represented here with its endearing form featuring a proboscis (that flexible organ that allows the animal to reach far away foliage), a pair of oval wide-tipped ears, a round rump, splayed hooves, and a stubby tail, stands squarely on all fours. Upon its back is a handled lid opening to the hollow interior. Beneath its resplendent gilding, the bronze has patinated to stunning green hues over the ages. A wonderful example from ancient China. Size: 6.5" L x 3.875" H (16.5 cm x 9.8 cm)
