Description:

East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. An impressive mold-made pottery figure detailed with glazed and hand painted pigments atop a rectangular base. He is a man wearing calf length tunic and coat, the skirt portion blazed a deep, lustrous brown, and the upper coat, face, and hat are painted in a chalky white hue. This white and the details in red, and black pigment were applied after firing, and are not protected by a glaze. Pottery figures like this one were placed into tombs during the Ming period to accompany and serve the deceased in the afterlife. Size: 4" L x 3" W x 11" H (10.2 cm x 7.6 cm x 27.9 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report is available to the buyer upon request.

Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000

  • Condition: Repaired, head reattached, rest of body is excellent. Fading and losses to some pigments and abrasion to underside of base. Old inventory labels on underside. TL hole on base and second TL hole under hat rim.
