Description:

East Asia, China, late Ming Dynasty, ca. early to mid-17th century CE. A group of 5 hand-built pottery jars of varying sizes, each covered in a dark brown glaze known as martaban. The 2 most petite jars have widely carinated bodies and squat rims, and the third vessel is of similar form that includes a pair of loop handles atop the shoulder. The 2 largest jars are either of inverted bell form or apple-form, one with a raised neck and thick rim, and the other with a squat rim. Martaban glaze was popular throughout Southeast Asia and China for centuries and was traded for along maritime routes. The name likely stems from the name of the Burmese city Martaban (now Mottama), a major shipping port. Size of largest: 5.05" Diameter x 4.8" H (12.8 cm x 12.2 cm)
