Description:

China, Late Ming Dynasty. 17th century. This wooden panel depicts a poet standing on clouds with waves paradoxically flowing above his head. During the Ming Dynasty, poets were held in high esteem and poetry was a flourishing art form. Many Ming poets were guided by Confucian thought; they were inspired to write about nature, philosophy, relationships, the human senses of sight and sound, and the list goes on. The iconography of this panel represents the high status of the poet. As he stands above the earthly realm in the sky perhaps pontificating upon the watery waves flowing above his head. 10"H x 5"W
