Description:

East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A glazed earthenware ornamental roof tile featuring a Ming warrior on horseback, mounted on a curved tile base, and glazed in sancai green and yellow hues. Below the saddle is a columnar support adorned with cloud formations on each side. The tile is displayed on a beautifully carved custom rosewood base, likely antique, possibly dating from the late Qing to early Republic period. Traditional Chinese buildings, especially temples, palaces, and wealthy residences, were typically constructed of wood with glazed terracotta or stoneware architectural elements like this. In Chinese tradition, roofs serve as a connection between the living and spiritual or heavenly realms, and they were often decorated to ward off evil and attract good fortune and blessings. Size: 9" L x 5.5" W x 14" H (22.9 cm x 14 cm x 35.6 cm); 16.5" H (41.9 cm) on included custom stand.
