East Asia, China, late Ming Dynasty, ca. 17th century CE. A beautiful wheel-thrown porcelain plate depicting a large fish in royal blue hues with grey cross hatching over the body, the piscine form surrounded by decorative blue motifs resembling kelp or another seaweed form. This piscatory design first appeared in the Yuan dynasty. Some of the blue glaze delineating the fish has crazed resulting in attractive vein-like patterns. The exterior walls are all adorned with the same creamy white ground hue and tastefully embellished with three loose blue squiggles. A signature is incised beside the fish on the tondo. The base is unfinished. Size: 9.875" in diameter (25.1 cm)
