Description:

East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A cast bronze statue of Buddha sitting in a full lotus pose atop a tiered lotus base. Buddha holds his hands in the Bhumisparsa mudra indicative of the moment just before achieving enlightenment and wears delicately incised robes around his waist and shoulders. His raised head bears gentle features such as downcast eyes beneath arching brows, a broad nose with flared nostrils, full lips with indented corners and a delineated philtrum, and long-lobed ears, all beneath a curled coiffure surmounted with a flaming ushnisha. Smooth layers of dark brown patina envelop the entire figure and imbue it with a dignified presentation. Size: 5.1" W x 9.7" H (13 cm x 24.6 cm)

Provenance: private Orange, California, USA collection, acquired in the 1930s
