Description:

**First Time At Auction**

China, Hongshan, 3500 to 2200 BCE. An expertly carved lapis lazuli tutelary spirit figure of an animorphic form, possibly a rabbit given its long ears (symbolizing the moon), boasting a deep blue color. Tutelary spirits are community deities of creation and nature traditionally believed to serve as guides with divine power, symbols associated with villages populated by particular surnames and ancestry. Beyond this symbolism is the inherent beauty of the lapis lazuli, a semi-precious stone cherished since antiquity. Perforation for suspension. Size: 3" H (7.6 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Private LA County collection formed over the period between 1980 and 2000; Ex-Peter Klika collection
