Description:

China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. This is an earthenware painted jar that probably functioned as a hu, a mortuary vessel. It also probably had a similarly decorated lid at one time. The painted designs are white and red, and probably originally included celestial narratives; there is a similar piece held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Size: 9.5" W x 12.75" H (24.1 cm x 32.4 cm).
