Description:

East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A mold-made ceramic lid, probably from a censer, in the form of a sacred mountain, known as Boshan Xianglu. The mountain is ringed by jagged foothills and lesser peaks that cluster around its slopes. Lids like this one reference the Han religion, which included belief in the mountainous Isles of the Blessed, realms of immortal beings. Remaining pigment - reddish, black, white, and grey - gives an idea of how brightly painted this item was when first made. Size: 6.35" W x 6.75" H (16.1 cm x 17.1 cm)
