East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A hollow-molded pottery figure of a bull standing atop delineated legs. The muscular bovine presents its large head, horns, and hump in a majestic manner, and light remains of red pigment are visible along both sides of the dewlap. Pottery bulls in Han Dynasty China were not only decorative artifacts but also carried deep symbolic and cultural meanings. They reflected the Han people's beliefs about the afterlife, their emphasis on power and vitality, and the importance of ritual practices in ensuring a successful transition to the next world.
