Description:

East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A hand-built pottery model of an altar building with a tiled roofline denoted with incised striations. The front features a broad doorway guarded by a pair of attendants beneath drooping archways, the door into the altar chamber slightly ajar behind them. Faint remains of orange pigment are visible across scattered areas of the obverse, suggesting that this was painted in vibrant hues when first created. Provenance: private Constance McCormick Fearing estate, Montecito, California, USA, acquired before 2004
