Description:

China, ca. 3rd century CE. Unusually large and well-modeled gray pottery tower has three individual levels, each modeled separately. These in turn sit on a raised base with a walled enclosure that would have contained farm animals and people, one of which accompany this piece. The upper levels have an elaborate eave structure with an open balcony and the top level has a beautifully impressed roof with tile pattern. The piece has extensive remains of its original white, red and green paint left in swirling patterns. Farm towers became very popular during the Han and Northern Wei Dynasties. 37\\\\\\\"H.

Provenance: Ex-Harlan J. Berk Gallery, Chicago, IL, ex-private St. Louis, MO collection.

  • Condition: As is typical with potteries from this time period, restoration to base, some of the levels and roof. The piece is, in general, in an excellent state of preservation.
