East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 220 BCE to 206 CE. A hand-built pottery eagle presenting an intriguing pose with its head bowed down towards wide feet with both wings curved downwards as if approaching a perch for a landing. The sinuous creature is decorated with applied white, yellow, and red pigment suggestive of colorful feathers. This bird was perhaps part of a larger figural ensemble with other animals and humans. Size: 2.125" W x 2" H (5.4 cm x 5.1 cm)

  • Condition: Repairs to proper right wing, tail, and legs near knees, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Fading and abrasions to original pigment, with light encrustations, and softening to some finer details. Light remains of original pigment throughout.
