Description:

**Originally Listed At $500**

East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 to 220 CE. A sizable, wheel-thrown pottery jar known a "hu" exhibiting a tall, piriform body with graceful concentric lines adorning the exterior. The shape of this wonderful piece was influenced by far older bronze wine vessels produced for the elite of ancient Chinese society from the late Shang Dynasty through to the Warring States. Such a vessel was often part of a burial shrine with other bronze or pottery wine storage and serving vessels to accompany the deceased in the afterlife - here the remains of root marks and earthen encrustations are a testament to its interment! Size: 8" Diameter x 13" H (20.3 cm x 33 cm)

Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Amiguet's Ancient Art, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to January 1, 2010
