East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A charming mold-made pottery rooster statue glazed with a deep green hue, an auspicious color of prosperity. Votive tomb figures like this one are part of a class of artifacts called mingqi - sometimes known as "spirit utensils" or "vessels for ghosts" and chickens were popular mortuary figures during the Han Dynasty. The rooster is not only a source of sustenance in the afterlife, but a symbol of fortune and rank- their head crest representative of an official's cap or a crown.
