Description:

**Originally Listed At $500**

East Asia, China, Western Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A hand-built ceramic model of a well topper with a wide base tapering to a thick circular rim. A pair of slanted pillars extend upwards from the rim and support a terraced roof with upward-projecting corners. The purpose of the slanted roof is to prevent rain water and other airborne materials from contaminating the natural underground water supply. Drawing water for use in daily life and agricultural practices was of the utmost importance to agrarian members of Han Dynasty China, and realistic models like this example serve as a humble reminder of such necessities. Size: 5.125" W x 8.375" H (13 cm x 21.3 cm).
