Description:

East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A large and impressive ancient mold-made pottery model of a house, inspired by traditional Chinese architecture traditionally found in the Han Dynasty. The house was created as a burial object or mingqi, to in essence 'stand in' for full-scale architecture, securing comfort for the deceased. This piece displays a characteristically sharply projecting tile roof accented with, this superstructure supported by a framework of posts, lintels - in pottery as well, but imitating timber - with an openwork doorway that leads into the hollow interior. The house stands on supports, which here are whimsical bears as its front-facing legs. The piece is glazed a pretty and iridescent light green. This piece was made to be placed into a tomb as a representation of a real house. The Han Dynasty was a period of wealth and stability for China, and the elaborate decoration of their burial places reflected this prosperity! Size: 17" L x 10" W x 18.5" H (43.2 cm x 25.4 cm x 47 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report is available to the buyer upon request.
