Description:

China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A heavy molded pottery votive certainly intended to be placed into the tomb of member of a wealthy class. Round vessel with slightly flaring walls and rolled rim, single cutout window, small shallow water well in center. This scene depicts an animal pen. Inside the pen are two goats seemingly playing with each other, but there certainly is the chance they are in the early stages of copulation. Over the years I have seen similar pens shown with pigs, ducks and even one that has fish on the base of the vessel and ducks along the outer rim. These pieces give us a fascinating glimpse into what people in the Han Dynasty valued. Size: 8.25" W x 4.25" H (21 cm x 10.8 cm)
