Description:

East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. An intriguing hollow-molded leaded copper applique showing a stylized bear with both forelegs and hind legs bearing large claws. A narrow attachment tang protrudes from behind the creature's head and illustrates how it would have decorated a personal item such as a chest or an article of clothing. The upright mammal has a sizable head with ovoid eyes, a thick snout, and a pair of perky ears. Faint remains of lustrous gilding accentuates areas of the face and neck, and mottled green, russet, and blue-green patina has formed across the body. Size: 1.625" W x 2" H (4.1 cm x 5.1 cm)
